Pre-born Twins Save Mom's Life by Kicking Away Tumor

UK residents, Michelle Stepney and her husband Scott, were expecting twins. However, at about 17 weeks into the pregnancy, Michelle was rushed to the hospital with what they suspected was a miscarriage. What it turned out to be shocked them.
Doctors at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London told the couple that Michelle had actually had cervical cancer, but that the twins' kicking feet had dislodged the tumor! The bad news came as the Stepneys' physicians urged Michelle to begin immediate chemotherapy treatments, and undergo a hysterectomy—which would terminate the lives of her two unborn daughters.
"If I hadn't been pregnant with the twins, the cancer may not have been discovered until it was too late," Mrs. Stepney explained. "I knew I could have an operation straight away and it would cure me of the cancer, but that would mean getting rid of my babies and I couldn't do that."
The Stepneys refused to end their babies' lives and waited till they were born to have the needed surgery. Now the twins are healthy girls who have just celebrated their first birthday, and their mother is cancer-free.
Said Michelle, "I owe my life to my girls, and that's why I could have never agreed with a termination."

英國卅五歲的婦女蜜雪兒．史黛普妮，第一次感覺到腹中雙胞胎在踢她時，驚喜萬分。不過這對尚未出生的姊妹「拳打腳踢」，不只是讓母親感覺到她們的存在，她們每踢一下都在拯救母親的性命。
當時史黛普妮渾然不知自己已經罹患子宮頸癌。胎兒不斷在子宮內踢腿，其實已經把她的腫瘤踢移位（dislodge）。她因為出現疑似流產現象送醫，這才發現罹患癌症。
疑流產送醫 始知罹子宮頸癌
英國《每日郵報》四日報導，從事會計工作的史黛普妮與大她一歲的公務員丈夫史考特已經育有一名五歲大的兒子。這次懷孕十四周時，知道肚裡懷了雙胞胎，便期待兩個小生命降臨。可是三周後就因為疑似流產而再度回到醫院。當醫生告訴她，這對胎兒把她的腫瘤踢移位時，她簡單難以置信。
醫生表示，這對雙胞胎救了她一命，如果沒有她們兩個，等到發現癌症可能就太遲了。史黛普妮說：「我感覺到她們在踢，但我不知道她們這麼踢我有多重要。」為了治療癌症，史黛普妮必須立即接受化療及切除子宮，這意味著她必須終止懷孕。
史黛普妮斷然拒絕放棄胎兒。她說：「我的命是她們救的，正因為如此，我絕對不同意終止懷孕。」
倫敦皇家馬斯登醫院最後讓她在懷孕同時接受化療，但化療的強度減低，以免影響胎兒，同時也能阻止癌細胞擴散。史黛普妮每兩周做一次化療，醫生同步密切監督胎兒狀況。
二○○六年十二月，懷孕卅三周的史黛普妮懷孕剖腹產下一對雙胞胎女嬰，除了母體化療導致嬰兒沒有頭髮之外，其他一切良好。

四周後，史黛普妮動了子宮切除手術，把腫瘤一併切除。去年十二月的檢驗結果顯示，她的癌細胞已經清除乾淨，沒有擴散。如今，這對雙胞胎姊妹已一歲多。
史黛普妮勇敢抗癌的經歷，獲得「英國癌症研究」慈善團體「為生命而跑」活動提名「最有勇氣婦女獎」。她說：「有一天我會告訴女兒，她們是如何挽救了媽媽的生命。」 |
